Tullahoma, TN

Date: Sept 10, started at 6:30 pm, counted until nearly 7:30

# of Swifts: 4500

Location: Tullahoma High School chimney, Tullahoma, TN

Weather: fairly clear

Our count was down a little from last year, but our August count was higher than in past years. We did have some cooler weather (overnight lows into the 50s) just before the Sep count. We had only counted about 750 swifts before the sun went down -luckily we had enough ambient light to finish the count for about another 20 minutes after sunset!

I was telling a friend about the hundreds of chimney swifts I saw in my back yard this morning, she thought I should tell you. I live in Granada Hills just west of Oak Hill. I always get swifts in our old style chimney. We took off the cap many years ago and always enjoy the sights and sounds. This morning the sky was rolling with them. I am used to seeing them at dusk. So I was pleased to see them this morning.

Audubon Society of Forsyth County always conducts its local swift watch a little later than your national dates, based on peak activity in our area. Our peak time usually is from mid-September to near the end of the month. Tonight, we conducted our watch at Northwest Middle School at 5501 Murray Rd. in Winston-Salem. This is a perennial site for a very large roost. Tonight during our watch, I estimated that at least 8000 swifts entered the chimney between 7:35 and 7:55.

CHSW reports have come to an end in the Maritime Provinces for this season(we think!) . The last swift sighting that I know of for New Brunswick is actually my own, on September 4th in Sackville, NB.

I’m attaching a summary of New Brunswick sightings.  These observations were either sent to me directly, taken from our scheduled roost watches, or posted on the New Brunswick nature listserv (https://listserv.unb.ca/cgi-bin/wa?A0=NATURENB ). I highlighted some location coordinates in yellow to indicate that those were only approximate coordinates based on some loose site descriptions I received. Often, times were not given.

Last evening marked the fourth consecutive year Forsyth Audubon (Winston-Salem, NC) conducted a swift watch. We congregated at Northwest Middle School, 5501 Murray Road, W-S at 7:15 PM (sunset =7:30 PM ). About 80 to 100 people showed up to witness the event and they were not disappointed. Over the next half hour an estimated 8000 swifts entered the big chimney. The sky was completely overcast with heavy dark clouds and winds were brisk.
